What would the garden pond be without its colorful, gliding residents? He would bring only half as much joy. Garden pond fans appreciate the calming effect of fish. If you watch them swimming and eating, you can switch off really well.

However, when choosing the species of fish, some questions should be answered in advance. How big and deep is the pond and where is it located in the garden? Does the pond have to be planted? Which fish is suitable for this pond? Which fish go together? What technical accessories are required to give the fish the best possible quality of life?

By far the most popular ornamental fish is the goldfish. The first references to the goldfish as a pet can be found in Chinese writings that are 3,000 years old. It is extremely robust and easy to care for. This makes it particularly interesting and recommended for garden pond beginners. This peaceful fish loves to swim in the company of four to five of its own kind. He also gets along well with smaller pond fish such as minnows and bitterlings.

In a pond at least one meter deep, it overwinters in the lower part. In summer, the water temperature of the pond should not exceed 20°C. Ideally, the pond is in semi-shade. The goldfish reaches a length of up to 30 cm – it only attains its magnificent color after the first year of life.

Goldfish feed on both pond plants and smaller aquatic creatures. Since goldfish also hunt their own spawn, the pond should have shallow bank areas with plants where the offspring can hide. Feeding special fish food from specialist retailers is also possible without any problems, as long as you follow the feeding guidelines. Goldfish tend to eat more than necessary.

A special breeding form of the goldfish is the shubunkin, which is characterized by its magnificent variety of colors. It comes in orange, yellow, white, bluish, and black color variants. However, some forms of this breed have not proven to be so suitable for wintering. You should therefore clarify this question with the breeder before buying.

Celestial goldfish

The heavenly or sky-eyed fish is a variety of goldfish from a Japanese breed, the ranchu. He inherits his ancestor’s characters with an inverted V-shaped caudal fin and a pair of bulging eyes from the telescopic fish and set upwards. The celestial fish’s name derives from the English celestial eye, whose eyes are directed toward the sky.
