Whatever the name of this little creature with the heart of a lion, the Pekingese is able to deliver a lot of happy moments. Joyful barking at the door when the owner returns, enthusiastic whirling underfoot, funny character – this is only a small part of what this dog will thank for love and care.
Today it is very difficult to find a purebred, thoroughbred Pekingese. In ancient China, the Pekingese was used for self-defense. Small dogs easily fit in a sleeve. In case of danger, they jumped out and rushed at the offender. These doggies were previously called imperial. Pekingese was a high society dog. The owners picked up a festive outfit in the same colors as the pet. Poems were dedicated to them. They personified the great and powerful of the emperors of China. One of the Pekingese was even declared the embodiment of the Buddha. It was believed that dogs similar to a lion protect the spirit of the owner, until his transfer to the afterlife. Five Pekingese were presented to Queen Victoria. In America, the Pekingese with the longest language in the world is recorded. The length of the tongue was 11.43 cm. Pekingese came to Germany, America, and the Netherlands only in 1900. When the Titanic hit the iceberg, it was carrying 12 dogs, a cat, and some birds (a canary and a few hens), among which was a Pekingese named Saint-Et-Sen. He was lucky to survive in this disaster and to escape with the owners on a lifeboat.
