The Swedish actress and three-time Oscar winner is one of the most important and popular actresses in film history. She was already a film star in her homeland when she played alongside Humphrey Bogart in “Casablanca” in 1942, creating one of the most famous lovers in film history. Ingrid Bergman was born in Stockholm on August 29, 1915, the daughter of a painter and photographer and a German mother.
When Ingrid Bergman was two years old, her mother died unexpectedly. At thirteen she lost her father and was orphaned. She grew up with relatives and attended a private girls’ school in Stockholm until the age of 17. In 1933 she passed the entrance exam for the Royal Drama School in Stockholm, where she was taught until 1934. After initial successes at the theater, she became a star in her home country in 1936 with the film “Intermezzo”. In 1937 she married the doctor Petter Lindstrom. American producer David O. Selznick recognized her talent for cinema and traveled with her to the United States in 1939, after their marriage and the birth of their daughter Pia. In 1939, Leslie Howard remade Intermezzo. Bergman won the hearts of the Americans. Her motherliness and fidelity in her marriage were particularly valued. She made her international breakthrough in the late 1940s with works such as “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “The House of Lady Alquist”.
The film “Juninacht” followed in 1940, which underlined their popularity. In 1942 the love drama “Casablanca” was created with Humphrey Bogart and her in the leading roles. Bergman won an Oscar in 1944 for her leading role in The House of Lady Alquist. In 1945, Alfred Hitchcock directed I Fight for You. In 1948 she met the Italian director Roberto Rossellini, with whom they made six films in the following years. From the acquaintance developed a love affair. In 1949 she separated from her husband and family. She moved to Rome with Roberto Rossellini. As a result, her films were boycotted in the United States. Producers feared box office flops, and no more US productions were made with her.
Even the marriage to Rossellini in 1950 and the birth of the three children Robertino, Isotta and Isabella could not change the situation. For Americans, she was an adulteress and was shunned. Nevertheless, both began to produce other films directed by Rossellini; as expected, each strip was a flop. Rossellini strictly forbade Ingrid Bergman to work with other directors. Under this pressure, her second marriage also became a disaster. After seven years without being in front of the camera, she divorced Rossellini in 1957. Through events, America had also been reconciled to her, and so she became the prodigal daughter returned home. Under which she was again in front of the camera for the film “Anastasia” in Hollywood in 1956. The film became one of her best-known works and was awarded the “Oscar” for the best leading role. In December 1958 she married the Swedish producer Lars Schmidt in her third marriage.
The film “Love Brahms” was made in France in 1960. In 1964, “The Yellow Rolls-Royce” followed, directed by Anthony Asquith and starring Shirley MacLaine, Omar Sharif and Alain Delon. In 1970, after 13 years of marriage, she was left and divorced by her third husband Lars Schmidt. In 1974 she stood in front of the camera for the production “The Orient Express”. Her convincing performances were honored with her third “Oscar”, this time for the best supporting role. That same year, doctors diagnosed her with cancer, and Ingrid Bergman withdrew from public life. In 1978 she shot the film “Herbstmonate” with Liv Ullmann in Germany. In 1980 she published her autobiography entitled “Ingrid Bergman, my life”. For “Golda Meir” she was seriously ill in 1981 for the last time in front of the camera.
Ingrid Bergman died in London on August 29, 1982, on her 67th birthday.
