Banderas actually wanted to be a professional soccer player, but had to look for new goals after breaking his foot at the age of 14. After graduating from school, he began his career as a dancer and stage actor at the theater in Madrid. Banderas was discovered at the theater by director Pedro Almodóvar, who helped him make his film debut in his 1982 film “Labyrinth of Passions”. The cooperation between the two was expanded and proved to be fruitful. When Banderas played a homosexual and kissed a man in “The Law of Desire” in 1986, the Spanish newspapers made controversial headlines, which soon made him famous, which was linked to numerous role offers.
Antonio Banderas acted in films like “Matador”, “Women on the verge of nervous breakdowns” or “Tie me up!”, all of which revolved around violence, love and sex. He celebrated his international breakthrough in 1993 with the drama “Philadelphia”. At the side of Tom Hanks, he embodied his life partner, who accompanies his friend who is suffering from AIDS to his death. Until 1994 he had roles in hit films such as “Mambo Kings” and “Interview with the Vampire” alongside Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. With the action film “Desperado”, Banderas and Salma Hayek made one of his most popular films in 1995.
This was followed by roles in “Miami Rhapsody”, “Playing With Fire” and in “Evita”, in which Banderas played with pop diva Madonna. From 1988 to 1996 he was married to Ana Leza. In 1996 he married actress Melanie Griffith. Their daughter Stella was born on September 24, 1996 in Marbella. In 1998, Banderas had another starring role in the film about the masked avenger in The Mask of Zoro, opposite Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones. In 1999 the film “Knocked Out” was released. Banderas then starred in the fantasy adventure “The Thirteenth Warrior” and also tried his hand at directing. He made his successful debut with the black comedy “Crazy in Alabama”; his wife Melanie Griffith starred in the film.
His other film projects include the comedy “Spy Kids” and the adventure film “The Body”, both from 2001, as well as the comedy adventure “Spy Kids 2 – The Return of the Super Spies” from 2002. 2003 Banderas starred on Broadway in the musical ‘Nine’ opposite Chita Rivera, for which he received a Tony Award nomination. In the fall of 2005, Martin Campbell’s film “The Legend of Zorro” was released in cinemas, in which Banderas’ main performance met with only cautious approval from the critics.
