Ravensburger Were Words award

How you play “Werewords.”

You can play Werewords offline and online. For the latter you need the free app. Depending on whether you want to play with or without the app, there are different game variants. In the following we will explain the variant without an app, for which you need a piece of paper and a pen and the role of the fortune teller is eliminated.

The game preparation

You take the mayor’s role cards and a werewolf and, depending on your number of players, a villager. If you play with more than five people, you should bring an additional werewolf into play.

Now you shuffle all the role cards face down. Each player gets one and looks at them in such a way that the others cannot see them.

The mayor reveals his card, takes the cards from the middle and looks at them so that the others cannot see them. Everyone knows who the mayor is, but not what other secret roles he plays. He also has “power” over the tokens he keeps in the bottom of the box. Place the correct, close, and wrong track markers next to the box.

In order to maintain readability, we have omitted gendering in this explanation (you will soon see why..). Of course we don’t exclude anyone, everyone is welcome to play!

The gameplay

First, everyone closes their eyes, after which a cycle of eye opening and closing begins to assume your roles:

1. Mayor: wake up, blindly choose from the word cloud. The chosen word is the magic word of the round, which he writes down on a piece of paper and closes his eyes.
2nd Seer: wakes up to look at the magic word and closes your eyes.
3. Werewolves: wake up and see who the other werewolves are, then close your eyes again.
4. Mayor: wakes up, turns the magic word around and closes your eyes.
5. Freemason: wake up, look for the like-minded and both close their eyes.
6. Everyone: open their eyes and start guessing the magic word
You have four minutes to guess. You have the opportunity to ask the mayor your “yes/no” questions and to advise each other on which word it could be. However, the mayor remains silent and only answers via the markers.

The tricky part is that the werewolves are trying to trick you so you can’t guess the magic word and they win.

Everything comes to an end

After the four minutes the game ends – depending on whether the magic word was guessed or not, the villagers or the werewolves win or lose.

Play with the app

If you decide to play with the app, you also have the role of the seer, who also knows the magic word, but is not recognizable as her and will help you to guess the term.

The app is great if you want to be guided through the game. This explains when which role is used, has magic words in its luggage, measures the time for you and offers a few other advantages that increase the fun of the game. There are also different levels of difficulty.

That’s why we like “werewords”

  • simple game rules
  • Ideal for in between (e.g. lunch break)
  • can also be played in larger groups
  • App guides you through the game – but is not absolutely necessary
  • secret puzzle fun
  • very mysterious due to the unrecognizable roles

Our conclusion

“Werwords” is a really fun guessing game that you can play during your lunch break, for example, because the rounds don’t last long. The rules are simple and the fact that the players have secret roles creates a certain crackling – because nobody knows who z. B. are the sneaky werewolves who want to lead you on the wrong track.

If you then also play with the app, there is an additional role that increases the fun of the game. You can also do without paper, pen and hourglass, because they take care of that.

What is the goal of Werewords?

You split into two parties. One is the villagers trying to save their village by finding out the secret magic word. The others are the werewolves who want to take over the village and try to prevent the guessing of the magic word.

Who is »Werwords« suitable for?

For everyone who likes mysteries and guessing games and enjoys being infiltrated but not knowing who is behind it. The game is also great for parties to get in touch with each other. Ravensburger recommends the title from the age of 10.

How much does “werewords” cost?

The UVE is 13.99 euros.
