Daniel Brühl was born on June 16, 1978 in Barcelona to a Spanish mother and a German father, but grew up with his father Hanno Brühl, a director, in Cologne.
Through his father’s profession and that of his uncle, he was a director for radio plays at West German Radio, Daniel came into contact with the entertainment industry as a child. When he was eight years old he began speaking radio plays, soon after that he also dubbed feature films. Daniel was also interested in acting and was successfully involved in his school theatre. In 1994, at the age of 16, he made his film debut in Roland Suso Richter’s “Sven’s Secret”. His performance convinced audiences and critics alike and he received further roles, such as in “Der Pakt – Wenn Kinderkillen” from 1996 and in “Blutiger Ernst” by Bernd Böhlich from 1998.
Despite his success as an actor, Daniel Brühl successfully completed school with his Abitur, but he never attended drama school. His first collaboration with his father Hanno followed in 1999 in “Hin und Weg”. In the same year Daniel celebrated his cinema debut with the teenage thriller “Land of Cockaigne” and in 2000 the comedy “School” followed. In 2001 Daniel Brühl convinced with the impressive portrait of a schizophrenic in “The White Noise”. For this performance he was awarded the “Bavarian Film Prize” in 2002 as the best young actor and the “Max Ophüls Prize”.
Daniel Brühl received the German Film Prize 2002 for his performance in the love story “No regrets”. This was followed by the road movie “Vaya Con Dios”, in which he played a monk, and the drama “Elephant Heart”. Daniel Brühl celebrated his international breakthrough in 2003 with “Good Bye, Lenin!”. Directed by Wolfgang Becker, he played a young East Berliner who, in order to protect his seriously ill mother, allowed the GDR to live on in her prefab apartment. He received the German and European Film Awards for his performance and was awarded the “César” as the best European actor in 2003.
His acting performance in the tragic comedy “The fat years are over” (2003) was also highly praised. In 2004, the drama “What good is love in thoughts” followed, in which he played a man who indulges in the intoxication of music and absinthe. “The Scent of Lavender” and “Farland” followed in the same year. In 2006, Daniel Brühl was seen alongside Jürgen Vogel for the first time. In the comedy “A Friend of mine”, the joint performance of the German stars, which tells the story of an unusual friendship, in which an instinctive freak meets a cool-headed person, was convincing. In 2013 he played racing driver Niki Lauda in the cinema production “Rush”.
