Anderson first moved to London with her parents in 1970. As a teenager, she returned to America in 1979 and resided in Grand Rapids, Michigan. There she joined the punk scene. After graduating from high school, she decided to become an actress. Small theater appearances followed, before she successfully applied to the Goodman Theater School of Drama at the University of Chicago. After completing her education with a diploma, she moved to New York. Here, Gillian Anderson worked hard for a living while pursuing roles. During this time she also made her first experiences in Broadway productions.

For example, Anderson took part in “Absent Friends”, for which she received the “Theatre World Award”. Then she was offered a role in the low-budget film “The Dead Have No Name.” In 1992, she starred in “The Turning” in a role that was important to her. Anderson took on the role of Nora in a remake of Henrik Ibsen’s play ‘A Doll’s House’ at the Donmar Warehouse Theatre.

In June 2009 her film, the satire Boogie Woogie, premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Here Anderson starred alongside Christopher Lee, Heather Graham and Charlotte Rampling. She is also working on a film about the life of journalist, author and Hemingway’s wife Martha Gellhorn, which she is producing and starring in.
