Caan spent his childhood in the borough of Queens. After high school, he decided to study economics at Michigan State University and was a member of the high school football team. He earned a black belt in karate and competed in rodeos. He later transferred to Hofstra University Law School, but soon thereafter chose acting. With a scholarship he studied with Wynn Handman and got his first engagements at the theater. Caan made his Broadway debut in 1961 with La Ronde. The following year he had additional Broadway successes opposite Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper in the play “Blood, Sweet and Stanley Poole”.
At the same time he got his first roles in TV series. After other guest roles in TV series and a few more Broadway appearances, James Caan made his big screen debut in 1963 as a sailor in The Girl Irma La Douce. Two years later he had his absolute breakthrough with “Red Line 7000”, in which he embodied the neurotic racing driver “Mike Marsh”. Caan was able to demonstrate his talent for dry humor in “El Dorado”. He convinced in the role of the incapacitated player “Alan Bourdillon Traherne”, known as “Mississippi”, alongside John Wayne and Robert Mitchum. Another success was the road movie “Never Love a Stranger” directed by Francis Ford Coppola, which was released in 1969.
Caan received an Emmy Award for his role as football star “Brian Piccolo” with leukemia in the TV movie “Friends Until Death”. Then Caan was again committed by Coppola – for the worldwide hit “The Godfather”. His explosive portrayal of the hot-headed “Corleone” son, “Sonny,” earned Caan an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor alongside Al Pacino and Robert Duvall. The sequel followed in 1975 with “The Godfather II”. James Caan made his directorial debut in 1979 with the film “The Trial of Power”, which has also been his only directorial project to date. It tells the story of a divorced father who has to fight for his children.
Two years later he was seen again in front of the camera. He was to be admired in the person of a thief in the title “The Loner”. From 1982 to 1987 James Caan lived a very secluded life. He returned to the big screen for Francis Ford Coppola’s film The Stone Garden. He then took on roles in films like Alien Nation and Misery. He managed to remain popular even in the 1990s. He mimed a sexist comedian in films such as “For the Boys” and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s treacherous mentor in the action thriller “Eraser”. In 1993 he starred in Flesh And Bone with Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan and Honeymoon with Nicolas Cage and Sarah Jessica Parker.
In addition to engagements in cinema films, Caan also took on television roles again. The cinema comedy “Mickey Blue Eyes” from 1999 and the gangster drama “The Yards – Im Hinterhof der Macht”, which was released in German cinemas in 2001, are among his subsequent film projects. These two productions once again reveal the wide range of performances by James Caan, who has mastered both the serious and the comedic craft. From 2003 to 2007, Caan starred in the television series “Las Vegas,” in which he played Ed Deline, the casino manager.
