The German actor Moritz Bleibtreu became a star of German cinema in the 1990s with films such as “Run Lola Run” and “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door”. Through his roles in comedies, thrillers and action films, he played his way to the top of the German film landscape. He received special attention for his performance in “Elementary Particles”, for which he was awarded a “Silver Bear” at the Berlinale…
Moritz Bleibtreu was born on August 13, 1971 in Munich, the son of actors Monika Bleibtreu and Hans Brenner.
Moritz Bleibtreu’s father left the family early, and mother and son moved to Hamburg. After the 10th grade, Bleibtreu left high school. He moved to Paris to work as an au pair boy. He then worked as a waiter and cook. Bleibtreu then took acting courses in Paris, Rome and New York. Three years later he got his first engagements at the Hamburger Schauspielhaus in Germany and appeared in Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”. TV productions followed and in 1994 Bleibtreu could be seen on the big screen for the first time. He mimed the Turk “Yüksel” in Peter Timm’s romance ””Einfach nur Liebe””. He became known a year later, when he played alongside Katja Riemann in ””Stadttalk””. Bleibtreu was treated as the discovery of German film. Bleibtreu had his final breakthrough in 1997 as the small-time crook “Abdul” in Til Schweiger’s ””Knockin” on Heaven’s Door”’.
He became the audience’s favorite and was awarded the “Ernst Lubisch Prize”. In 1998 he was also presented with the “Filmband in Gold”. After that, Bleibtreu starred in ””Luna Papa”” as the village idiot “Nasreddin”, who was mentally retarded after being injured in the war. Bleibtreu was the only German actor in the film by Russian director Bakhtiar Khudojnazarov. Filming took place between Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, where fighting between the local peoples broke out during filming and the team had to be evacuated. Then Bleibtreu played in 2000 in the road movie ””Im Juli””; in it he follows his dream woman to Turkey. Filming was repeatedly interrupted by aftershocks after the severe earthquake in Turkey. In 2001, Bleibtreu was represented in two other feature films. He played the leading role in Oliver Hirschbiegel’s directorial debut ””The Experiment”” and took on the role of a pizza baker who smoked weed in “Lammbock – Alles in Handwerk”.
