In bowling, a heavy ball is rolled along a smooth wooden lane with the aim of knocking down as many of the 10 pins that are there. Each knocked over pin is worth one point. Extra points are awarded for a “strike” in which all cones fall. Each player has ten frames (games) available, each frame contains two throws. On a strike and he gets 10 points plus the total of two more throws. If he can now knock down all ten pins in both throws, this is a “spare” and he again gets 10 plus points plus the score from another throw. If one or more pins are still standing after the second throw of a frame, the frame is called an “open frame”.

In order to play curling correctly, you absolutely need the curling rules. We have summarized these for you and explained them in detail so that there are no misunderstandings during the game.
Curling is an exciting and fast-paced game on the ice and is easy to learn and has some similarities to curling, ball sports, boules and bocce.
For precision and strategy sports, in which two teams, each with four players, play against each other on an ice rink (rink). The aim is to have one of your own stones placed closer to the tee (center of the target circle, also called the house) than the opposing team at the end of a round.
History of curling
The first attempts at curling date back to the late Middle Ages. The game was first mentioned in 1541 at Paisley Abbey in Renfrewshire. There, a Scottish admiral had converted his lucky charm into a token to push it across the ice. First, the game spread in Europe, later other regions followed and it became more and more popular. Thus, in 1716, the first curling club and the first rules of the game were created. At first, everything was still quite non-standard, quite unimaginable for today’s times. Those of you who are in Scotland can visit what is probably the heaviest stone in curling history: it weighed a whopping 58.5 kg. Most of the time, however, one played with stones from nature and more with luck than brains – also unimaginable today.
In 1880, curling fans could look forward to the first tournament at international level, and women have also been taking part since 1979. The success story of curling goes so far that it became an Olympic sport – in 1924 only as a demonstration competition, since 2006 it has been an official competition and subsequently Great Britain became the Olympic champion.
The basics
The lot decides who gets to start.
Each competition lasts between eight and ten rounds
A game is never undecided.
Curling is a gentleman’s sport, so there is no referee
The team
A team consists of four players who have a fifth player with them as a substitute.
Skip (captain)
Lead (plays the first two stones in the “end” (= round))
Second (plays the 3rd and 4th stone in the “end” (= round))
Third (plays the 5th and 6th stone in the “end” (= round))
Substitutes (test the stones for their “curl” with the coach and step in during the game if necessary)
The playing field
The curling field (“Sheet”) is 45.7 meters long and 5 meters wide. At the end of the playing field you will find a 3.6 m large target circle in the ice – the “house”. The rings of this target circle are used to determine how close a rock has been pushed to the center of the house.
The lines on the field are used for orientation and thus fulfill important tasks.
Behind the circle is the hack: used to push off the player after the throw. The “center line” starts from the middle and runs to the opposing “house” and connects the two tee lines. You can see this in the center of the target circle, which marks it (tee is the center of the circle),
In front of the circle you will find the “Hogline” (from one to the other it is 21.94 meters), which also delimits the “Free Guard Zone” up to the tee line. It marks the spot where you have to throw your stone at the latest. If you don’t, the stone is thrown out of the game.
The backline marks the end of the sheet. If a stone slips behind them, it flies out of play, as does crossing the sidelines on the right and left side.
The curling stone
On the top of the curling stone is a handle, which is usually the color of the team. The aim is, when you let go of it, to get it to “curl”, i.e. to turn or slide around curves. This allows you to “slip” the opposing guards.
Today’s curling stones are standardized and weigh a maximum of almost 20 kg, but there are also lighter models.
That’s how you play curling
Gameplay
The round is called “end” in curling jargon. The lot decides whether team A or B gets to start (by our explanation, A gets to start).
The lead of Team A plays the first stone by crouching down and kicking the stone in front of him. At the “Hogline” he has to let go of it at the latest and hope that he can place it well in the “House”. In order to have a better influence on this, another player on the team can help out with a curling broom to make the ice “more slippery”.
Thereafter
This is how you collect points
Your goal is to place your checkers as close to the center of the house as possible – and closer than the opposing team. The team that manages this wins the “End” and gets to place the first stone in the next round. Only one team can receive points at a time.
If you don’t agree on which stone is closer, use the measuring tape.
Winner
The team with the most points at the end of the competition wins. This is the case after 10 rounds provided there is a clear winner. But you can also give up or have to keep playing until a winner is determined.

How long does a curling game last?
You should plan a good two hours for a game, spread over eight or ten ends (passes).
Why do you wipe in curling?
The wiping melts the ice, which reduces the resistance between the Stirling stone and the ground. In this way, a lot of influence can be exerted on the result. It also cleans the playing field.
Why is the curling field irrigated with a kind of sprinkler during the break?
This also applies to improving the soil or ensuring that the stone cannot become stuck. The light spray creates small ice nubs that the stone can slide over because they act as a “buffer” between the ground and the stone.
How are team points determined?
You play ten separate ends (if no one gives up beforehand or you have agreed otherwise). At the end of each end there are points that you add up at the end of the game. You collect the points with your stones or where they are located.
Curling board games to play at home
If you are not fond of ice sports, you don’t have to do without curling fun. Various providers such as Engelhart, Noris and a few others offer curling board games. However, these only have one target circle, so you can curl your stones from the opposite side. The average cost factor is 20 to 35 euros.
The hitting game between two teams of nine is a hitting game that is considered quintessentially American and as popular in the US as soccer is in Europe or cricket in England.
Goal of the game
A game usually runs over nine innings, in which both teams try to score points (runs). In the runs they try to advance on bases. When the fielding team has played three players out, they have the right to bat.
The playing field
The playing field consists of 2 parts. Usually limited by a fence. The “Fair Territory” is usually in the shape of a quadrant, the straight sides of which are referred to as touchlines
and are 90 to 120 meters long.
At the top of this quarter circle is a small square measuring 27 x 27 meters, the corners of which are marked by the three bases and a home base (at the top of the quarter circle). The bases are rubber cushions that are embedded or anchored completely flat in the ground. The home base is a white pentagonal hard rubber plate shaped like a Santa Claus house. The rest of the semicircle is called the outfield.
In the center of the infield is a small 10 inch mound called Pitchers Mound. The rectangular rubber plate on top is called the pitchers plate.
From this rubber field (rubber), the pitcher has to throw the balls past the opposing batter, 18 meters away, to his catcher. The catcher crouches just behind home base, facing the pitcher. The pitcher must aim through an imaginary area that can be hit.
In baseball, there are no relevant specifications for the size of the field, which is why the referee, called the umpire in baseball, communicates with the ground rules before the game, which take local conditions into account.
Innings / length of game
A period of play in which each team is on offense and once on defense is called an inning. Normally, nine of these innings are played. If it is then a tie, an extra inning is played for a clear victory. There is only a draw if the game is adjourned due to bad weather.
Strike zone
The strike zone is an imaginary square that extends from the batter’s knees up to his elbows, above a mark on the floor at that exact height.
In baseball there are 3 tries, 3 bases and 3 outs (for a point). So a lot revolves around the number 3.
The duel between pitcher and batter
This duel is about balls and strikes
The players on offense compete individually against the pitcher in a predetermined batting order.
The goal of the pitcher is to throw the ball through the striker zone in such a way that the batter cannot hit the ball at all or only very weakly.
Ball
A ball is when the pitcher misses the strike zone and the batter also makes no attempt to bat the ball. A pitcher shall not fake a pitch when preparing to pitch,
he must also perform it, otherwise it is an infraction, also known as balk.
Strike
A strike is a ball that passes the strike zone. The batter should hit it into the field as best as possible. If he doesn’t catch that ball, or doesn’t swing it at all, it’s a strike.
If the batter concedes 3 strikes, it is a strike out.
The plate umpire is the main referee and must always announce a “strike”.
Batted Ball
The game gets interesting when the batter hits the ball with the baseball bat and hits it back onto the field. This turns him into a runner. He drops the bat to go to the
to run first base. If it is a fly ball that is caught directly by a field player, the batter is “out immediately”. All runners who are at a base try to run to the next base and the next base by running fast and thereby score points before the batted ball is brought back to the base by the opposing team.
Base stealing
A runner is safe if he reaches a base before the fielding team can get the ball there. He then has a “base hit”, so they say. He can always try to run two or three bases at a time.
There can be at most one runner on each base. So if a runner comes from behind (this is always the case on first base). The exception is with a fly out, since the batsman is obliged to run to first base, so the runner there must run ahead in any case, whether he can make it or not.
There may be a “force out” at the target base. If no runner is coming from behind (for example, if a runner is on second base and first base is free), then he can choose to run or stand. Volunteer runners can only be tagged out (touching with the ball in the
glove), cannot be thrown out by force out (ball reaches base before the runner).
A “double play” is common. If a runner is on first base and the other two bases are vacant, the defense throws the ball to second base first (force out
of the runner who had to run from first base to give way to the new batter who was running behind). From there, the new batter must continue to first base (force out the batter, who always has to run). In this game situation, two outs are scored in one move.
The referee is called the umpire in baseball. With his sleeves he signals whether a runner has reached the base safely. At the same time, the opponents try to bring the batted ball back to this base with their field players in order to throw the runner out. If the ball is thrown onto the base first, the runner is “force out”.
A runner who has gone around the field touching each base with his hand has gone around the field and his team gets a point. (Run)
But even in this situation, the opposing team can score. She gets a point if she can “spot” at least 3 runners.
A “flyout” is used for this. A flyout is a batter’s shot that is thrown high enough in the air for a fielder on the opposing team to catch the ball in the air. The batsman is sent straight back to the bench by a ball caught out of the air in this way.
Ground out
If the ball comes through the field players, who can pick up the ball from the ground and throw it further, and are also allowed to run with the ball, in front of the batter to the base, this is a groundout. The batter has to go back.
The duel between pitcher and batsman. This can be called the heart of baseball.
Strikeout
One way to spot the batter is to stop him from hitting the ball. Thus, the pitcher tries to throw the ball in such a way that it flies through the hitable area (StrikeZone) without the batter being able to hit the ball.
A miss is when the thrower misses the strike zone. After 4 misses, the batter is allowed to advance comfortably to first base.
After 3 unsuccessful batting attempts, the batter is out.
A runner can attempt to “walk” to the next base at any time, even if the batter never batted the ball.
Once the pitcher has started his pitching motion, the opportunity to do so arises. The pitcher must not interrupt the throw. The runner tries to get to the next base before the catcher (who has now caught the pitcher’s throw) can throw the ball there.
It’s called base stealing. To facilitate this task, the runners often advance a few steps before the punch. If the pitcher thinks a runner has overdone it, he may throw the ball to the appropriate baseman instead of to the batter. A pick off is when that gloved baseman touches the runner with the ball before that runner can run back to base. The runner is out.

You can even use the bat to block an opponent. The ball may also be hit in the air with either side of the caman.
Finally, players wear hard hats and leg guards.
The goalkeeper may also touch and defend the ball with the palm of his hand.
Matchfield
The size of the field is 73 m x 128 (up to 155) m. The long sides of the field are called sidelines, the narrow sides byelines. The most important markings are the center circle, two semi-circles and two semi-circular areas (10 yard areas) in front of the goals.
Also marked is the penalty kick, which is marked by a semicircle with a radius of 4.50 at a distance of 18 meters in front of the goal.
As in football, the goal line is on the edge of the byeline.
Rules
At the beginning, 2 players stand in the center circle and cross their clubs over their heads. The referee throws the ball in the air above them and they duel with their racquets to win the ball. Attackers who enter 10 yards from the ball are offside.
Goal
The goal has a net and is 3.65 m wide and 3 m high, similar to hockey. The regulations stipulate that the crossbar and posts must be painted white and made of metal or wood. Each team tries to score as many goals as possible in the allotted time.

What are shinty balls made of?
The ball is a hard solid sphere of around half the diameter of a tennis ball, consisting of a cork core covered by two pieces of leather stitched together.
How big is a shinty ball?
The shinty ball consists of a cork core covered with two pieces of leather that are stitched together. These balls have a circumference of around 7.5-8 inches and weigh between 2.5-3 ounces.
Skittles is a fast and fun game where you try to knock down nine skittles with one ball. It’s similar to bowling, but a little easier for some because the balls don’t have finger holes.
To bowl, you should know bowling rules. We have summarized these for you and explained them in detail so that there are no misunderstandings during the game.
History of Bowling
A forerunner of today’s bowling was already played in ancient Egypt – it is considered one of the oldest sports in the world. In the 19th century, the game was already so established that you could find it at every fair, which developed into the first bowling communities forming in the 19th century. Initially, the aim was to support those in need, but the sporting idea came to the fore, so that in 1885 the “Central Association of German Bowling Clubs” e was formed. He created generally valid rules for playing bowling at a sporting level – which led to the first German championship in 1891. The First World War led to the dissolution of the DKB, which was re-established after its end.
The German Skittles and Bowling Federation (DKB) guards:
Bowling League Classic
Bohle Bowlers Association
Scissors Bowling League
Bowling Union
But just because there is also an association doesn’t mean you don’t have to do without bowling as a leisure activity. In every major city there are skittle alleys and bowling alleys, quite often also in the basement of restaurants.
Many different bowling games have developed over time:
Ups and downs
fox hunting
More and more / less and less
Christmas tree
Three and less
Big and small house number
Man don’t fret
Even or odd
Four digits
You need that for bowling
a train
nine cones
a ball
suitable shoes
The basics
The team
There is no such thing as a team, because each of you bowls for your own points. It is up to you whether you want to form a team in which you take turns. In this respect, the rules in the leisure sector are very flexible.
The playing field
The playing field is called the “lane” and consists of the run-up area, the roll-on area and the position area. The 6-meter run-up area is reserved for the players, the 20-meter run-on area for the ball and the positioning area for the cones.
In Germany, you can choose between asphalt (classic), bohle, scissor and bowling lanes, with hobbyists mostly playing on bohling lanes because that’s more practical for the location.
Since the playing field is quite slippery and the operators want to protect their lanes, you need special shoes. You can borrow these or buy them yourself if you play regularly or are active in a club.
That’s how you bowl
Gameplay
You place the cones or they are set up in a diamond shape towards you and are located at the end of the track. You are at the beginning of the track and let the ball roll by pushing it off with one hand. You should be precise in order to knock over as many of the nine cones as possible.
If you don’t succeed on the first throw, you can try again. You get one point for each cone.
You play a total of nine rounds, but you can also agree on more or less.
Winner
At the end, i.e. when you have played all rounds, you add up your points. Whoever was able to grab the most will leave the round as a beaming winner!
Is bowling a sport?
Bowling is a target sport and recreational activity in which a player rolls a ball toward pins (in pin bowling) or another target (in target bowling).
How much does it cost to go bowling?
A typical game of bowling will cost each person between $2 to $5 per game. This cost varies based on the bowling alley. Some bowling alleys may charge per hour of gameplay instead of per game. Another cost to consider is shoe rentals.
How much does a bowling ball weigh?
There are many different types of bowling balls, and they typically weigh between 6 and 16 pounds.
What is the proper way to bowl?
First: Straighten your hand and wrist. Second: Hold your bowling arm out at a distance while you’re bowling. Third: Keeping your arm straight, swing it towards your ankle. Fourth: Rotate the wrist, hand, and arm away from your body as you bring the ball near your ankle.
How do you bowl well for beginners?
Do not stand on the approach.
Wait your turn.
Don’t use balls that aren’t yours.
Don’t yell or shout things.
Don’t kick the ball return.
No mockery or taunting.
Don’t hit or try to hit the pin-sweeper.
Don’t throw several balls at once.
How do you bowl step by step?
What are the 3 basic skills in bowling?
Ball fit and weight.
Armswing.
Footwork.
Timing.
Release.
Finishing position.
What is the secret to bowling?
The idea is to keep your wrist steady—if the wrist is too loose, the ball’s weight will take your arm off its intended path. Maintain a smooth, even motion that you’ve had on the approach and release the ball down the lane. If you’re new to bowling, understand that you don’t have to throw the ball too hard.
How do I get a strike every time in bowling?
Keep your arm straight as you bring it behind you for the backswing, making sure it stays close to your body for the entire throw. Timing is crucial when you release the ball, and it’s recommended to let go just as your swing reaches its lowest point, near your feet.
Where do you aim when bowling?
While most people would believe that aiming for the centre arrow is the key to getting the head-on strike, it’s actually not the first choice. The ideal arrow to aim for is generally the second one from the centre, on whichever side your bowling arm is. This helps you get right to that pocket.
What makes a good bowler?
Swing the ball both ways or be able to bowl a good outswinger or a good inswinger, a good seam position, patience, accuracy, pitches the ball up rather then banging it in short (you have better chances of getting wickets of proper balls), able to get cut both ways and if possible – able to bowl reverse swing.
How do you bowl like a pro?
What should you not do while bowling?
One of the biggest mistakes novice bowlers make is the chicken wing. This is a bad bowling posture where the bowler’s arm and hand curve inward at release. This causes the arm to take on a V-shape at the backswing (like a chicken wing). This is sometimes caused by trying to put too much force behind the ball.
Is bowling hard to learn?
Bowling is not a very hard game, it is very easy to learn the basics of bowling but mastering consistency in bowling is pretty hard and may take years of practice. You can easily become a good weekend bowler but bowling at a professional level will require a ton of practice.
In order to play table tennis correctly, you absolutely need the table tennis rules. We have summarized these for you and explained them in detail so that there are no misunderstandings during the game.
In the game, a small, light plastic table tennis ball is hit back and forth across the table. You must not touch the net in the middle. A game round – the so-called set – ends when one of the players makes a mistake, for example missing the ball or the ball gets caught in the net. That means the opposing player wins a point. Whoever has collected the most points or eleven points the fastest at the end wins.
History of table tennis
Table tennis, also known as ping pong, is a ball sport that originated in Great Britain in the late 19th century and quickly became popular. Originally, it was a variation of the game of tennis that was played outdoors in its early form. Because of the rainy weather in England, table tennis had to be moved indoors and onto tables. The first international table tennis competitions took place in Vienna in 1902. Table tennis world championships have existed since 1926 and table tennis has been a discipline of the Summer Olympics since 1988.
Equipment needed
If you want to play table tennis, there are two options: as a hobby or more professionally, depending on which there are different requirements for your equipment.
Hobby: table tennis
Racket and ball
For hobby and home sports, you can use one of the inexpensive playsets that you can buy on the internet, in toy and sporting goods stores.
Table and net
You can pretty much take any table you can find. Whether you use ping-pong tables in the park, buy your own, or repurpose a long desk, the rules aren’t quite as strict in the hobby space. It is only important that you and your teammate(s) pull into a net, whereby a drawn line also goes if you don’t have a net at hand.
Club/professional table tennis
Space / freedom of movement
You need certain basic equipment to practice the sport professionally. Table tennis also needs enough space, not only for the table, but also for the freedom of movement of the players.
In Germany, for example, it is stipulated that a table tennis competition room must be at least 10 to 12 meters long and 5 to 6 meters wide.
Table and net
A table tennis table usually has a matt green or matt blue painting or coating. In the middle, a net about 15 centimeters high is stretched across the table. Players have wooden table tennis bats with a saucer-sized face, rubber coating, and handle.
Racket and ball
A table tennis table usually has a matt green or matt blue painting or coating. In the middle, a net about 15 centimeters high is stretched across the table. Players have wooden table tennis bats with a saucer-sized face, rubber coating, and handle.
Table and net
To be competitive, a table must be 2.74 meters long and 1.525 meters wide. The table surface must be exactly 76 centimeters above the floor. The playing surface can be made of any non-reflective material and is usually dull green or dull blue in color. However, the rule of thumb is that a ping-pong ball dropped from a height of 30 centimeters must bounce 22 to 25 centimeters.
White dividing lines run along the edges and a center line divides the tabletop lengthwise into equal halves. The edge markings running parallel to the net are called the base line, the edge lines running at right angles to the net are the so-called side lines.
The net with suspension is attached to the table on the right and left by means of clamps and must be 15.25 centimeters high. The net tension may not allow the net to drop more than one centimeter if it is loaded with 100 grams in the middle.
Racket and ball
The bats are mostly made of wood. The slightly oval striking surface is about the size of a saucer and consists of wood glued several times in the middle. But there are also rackets made of carbon, Kevlar or fiberglass veneers. For the grip there are variants for the shake hand position preferred by European players and the penholder position preferred by Asian players. The racquets must have a red or black, mostly knobbed, rubber coating on the front and back. There are different types of coatings for professional sports.
Table tennis balls can be made of celluloid or other plastic material in dull white and dull orange colors. They are hollow and therefore very lightweight and must be 4 centimeters in diameter. The prescribed weight is between 2.67 and 2.77 grams.
The rules of the game – table tennis
As with lawn tennis, table tennis can be played as a single competition or as a double competition. There are competitions in singles, doubles and mixed. Two players compete in singles and four in doubles.
The first rules for table tennis based on the rules for lawn tennis were published in 1875 by the English engineer James Gibb. The current set of rules for table tennis applies internationally. There are no age restrictions for practicing this sport, but specific regulations for professional competitions also apply in this regard. In the following the most important rules of the game; the rules in professional table tennis have even more additional details, from the required sportswear to the type of rubber coating on the bats.
Game Start: The table tennis game round is called a set and begins with a player’s serve. Each player has two consecutive serves, after which the right to serve changes. A game is usually played over three winning sets (“best-of-five”) or, in the major tournaments, over four winning sets (“best-of-seven”).
Sentence
The player who scores 11 points first and leads by at least two points wins a set. When both players have reached 10 points, the game goes into lengthening and it is served alternately. Switch sides after each set. In the decisive last set, the sides change as soon as one of the players has reached 5 points.
surcharge
The right to serve is drawn by lot, as is the choice of sides. In singles, there are no rules about which opponent’s half the serve must come up on.
When serving, the ball must first lie freely on the open hand and then be thrown up. Before the shot, the ball must not touch anything and must first bounce on its own half of the table, over the net and then on the opponent’s half of the table.
If the ball touches the net, this is a net service and must be repeated. If the ball touches the net and then goes out of bounds, i.e. on or beyond the opponent’s marked side lines, the opponent gets a point. Also, if you miss the thrown ball on serve, it counts as a mistake and gives a point to the opponent.
Rally
The ball must be hit with the racquet after it has hit your own half of the table and played directly onto the opponent’s half of the table. If the ball touches the net during a rally and then lands correctly in the opponent’s field and not out of bounds, this is not considered a fault. If the ball touches other objects such as clothing, the ceiling or the wall during the rally, this automatically counts as a mistake and gives the opponent a point. It is also always a mistake if the ball touches the side of the table on or behind the opponent’s sidelines (i.e. goes out of bounds). A rally “volley” from the air like in tennis is not allowed. Leaning on the table with the other hand during the rally is also prohibited.
Peculiarities of doubles
In doubles, two players play against each other as men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles, i.e. a female and a male person together in one team. When serving, the ball must first touch the server’s right half of the court and then bounce diagonally across the opponent’s half.
At every rally, it is imperative that the players take turns playing the ball each time. If this order is not followed, the opponents get a point.
If a deciding set has to be played, ends are switched once a doubles team has reached five points.

It is hard to believe that the forerunner of today’s tennis was played in monastery courtyards. It was French monks in the Middle Ages who enjoyed a game of racquets. This should spread in the 16th and 17th centuries as “Jeu de Paume” (“game with the palm of the hand”) among the nobility and bourgeoisie and later also in general in France and England. While the upper class indulged in this game in ball game houses, the common people played it outdoors. If tennis was originally played on lawns, the most common surfaces on tennis courts today are red sand or brick dust, carpeting and synthetic granules, less often grass and artificial turf. Indoors, the game is usually played on a hard, granulate or carpeted court.
In Great Britain, modern tennis was officially born in 1874, when Major Walter Clopton Wingfield registered a patent for the game of tennis in February 1874. This quickly spread through the British colonies around the world. The first international tennis tournaments took place as early as 1900, the first tournament in the legendary Wimbledon even as early as 1877. Established as a popular sport after the Second World War, tennis is now one of the world’s most important sports. Since 1988, tennis has also been one of the competitions at the Summer Olympics. So far, however, the question of where the term “tennis” came from for this game has not been clarified. The assumptions range from a modification of the word “dance” to St. Dennis as the patron saint of players.
Content and design
Like its predecessor jeu de paume in the Middle Ages, modern tennis is a racquet game that can be played by two or four players. A net is stretched in the middle of a marked tennis court and a tennis ball is hit back and forth over it with special rackets. The middle of the net must not be touched. A game round – the so-called set – ends when one of the players makes a mistake, for example missing the ball or the ball gets caught in the net. That means the opposing player wins a point and, roughly speaking, whoever collects the most points faster wins.
In professional tennis there is always a chair umpire on one side of the court on a high chair. In the past, there were also line judges, which are no longer necessary thanks to modern technical aids.
A tennis match is commonly referred to as a tennis match. Many other terms in the Rules of the Game continue to be in English or in English units of measure. In player versus player, a singles match and a two-player match is doubles. There are several variants: in men’s doubles two men play against each other, in women’s doubles two women and in mixed doubles a mixed team of men and women play against each other.
Playing field, markings, and net
A tennis court is rectangular, divided into fields by white line markings and has a net stretched in the middle. The marking lines limit the playing fields, the so-called baselines (baselines) parallel to the net and the sidelines (sidelines). For a singles, the court is 78 feet (23.77 meters) long and 27 feet (8.23 meters) wide. The playing field for a doubles is a bit wider, namely 36 feet (10.97 meters). The lines are part of the playing field, which means a ball can fall partially or completely on the line and still remain in play.
Also important for the game are the service lines parallel to the net at a distance of 21 feet (6.40 meters) on both sides and the center line of service in the middle of the field from the net to the service line. The area formed by the net and the service line is known as a “half field” because the service line bisects the half of the game, but also as a T-field because the center line of service and the service line form the letter “T”. Therefore, many also use the term T-line for the service line. The areas of the T-court are the service courts used for small court tennis (kids’ tennis).
The net is typically 3 feet (0.914 meters) high, 3.5 feet (1.07 meters) in the middle and at the ends. It usually protrudes about 3 feet (0.914 meters) on both sides of the playing field. The net in doubles is usually wider than in singles matches, but singles can also be played with a wider net.
Racket and ball
A tennis racquet has a handle or shaft wrapped with a ribbon. Strings are clamped into the racquet head, which form the striking surface. In the past, tennis rackets were mostly made of wood, but today carbon fiber reinforced plastic is mostly used. The strings are usually made of nylon or polyester. The racket weighs between 280 and 350 grams and can be a maximum of 27 inches (73.7 centimeters) long and 12.5 inches (31.7 centimeters) wide. The club face can be 625 to 750 square centimeters. There are several serve and rally techniques (forehand, backhand, smash, drop shot, volley) and ball manipulation techniques (drive, topspin, slice) that can be learned through practice.
Tennis balls weigh between 56.7 and 58.5 grams and have a diameter of 6.54 to 6.86 centimetres. They are mostly made of rubber, are covered with a layer of felt and are under excess air pressure. If the excess air pressure escapes after a period of time, the ball’s bounce decreases and a new ball must be used. There are also balls that consist of different layers of rubber and whose bounce does not depend on air pressure. In tournaments, however, pressure balls are used almost exclusively. Tennis balls used to be black or white, but since about 1970 light yellow has prevailed because these balls were easier to see when tennis matches were broadcast on television.
The rules of the game
On the tennis court, a player stands on each side of the net in singles. The aim is to hit the ball over the net into the opponent’s half and if possible in such a way that the opponent misses the ball completely or cannot return it well. The basic rules are universally the same, but there are differences in details in doubles, children’s tennis (a smaller playing surface) or wheelchair tennis.
Start of game:
The game begins when a player serves the ball. Who starts is usually decided by drawing lots. When a player serves, the ball must land within a certain mark in the opponent’s court. The opponent must reach and return the ball if the ball has hit the playing area only once. If the ball hits more than once, the opponent misses the ball or hits it into the net or the so-called “out”, the other player has scored a point.
Match and Set:
A tennis match lasts at least two sets, usually a maximum of three sets. A set is won when a player has scored six points, i.e. won games. However, there must also be a two-point lead over the opponent. If this is not the case, i.e. there is a tie or only a one-point lead, play must continue until one player has a two-point lead. In other words, a 6:4 is a won set, at 6:5 play must continue until it is 7:5. However, there are additional rules that complicate the way points are counted in games. In professional matches, the rules for tie breaks or match tie breaks are usually introduced, but these are hardly relevant in amateur sports.
Rallies:
Basically, a set is won if you collect points. Points are awarded if the opponent cannot place the ball in the valid field. Therefore, each player tries to let the ball come up in the opponent’s valid playing field in such a way that it can no longer be played back validly. The first time the ball touches the ground in the opposing field counts. For example, if the ball lands outside the marking of the singles playing field, the serve is invalid. It is also possible for the opponent to hit the ball back in his own field as a so-called “volley” (directly from the air) before the first touch. However, when serving, the opponent may not use the volley technique.
The rally is considered legal if
the player hits the ball over the net with the racket; also sideways past the net is allowed
the ball has touched the ground in their own half of the field no more than once before the second leg
the ball touches the ground in the opponent’s half of the field, unless the opponent returns it first (volley);
no player touches the ball with any part of the body
no player touches the net with any part of the body or the racket
a player hits the ball with the bat only once.
Surcharge
The serve for a tennis match is also called “service” and must always be behind the baseline and always in the front, diagonally opposite field (“serving field”) of the opponent. A game usually starts on the right side. The valid serve zones for singles and doubles are slightly different, with singles these execution spaces are slightly smaller.
Only after the ball hits the opponent’s field may the person serving enter the field of play, otherwise he commits a foot fault. If the ball does not land in the legal field, there is a second attempt, the “second serve”. If the serve fails again, it is considered a so-called double fault and the opponent receives a point. If the ball touches the net during the serve, but then lands in the valid opponent’s court, the serve must also be repeated. A lost advantage through the serve is also known as a “break”.
If the ball lands in the valid field on serve, the rally can begin and the game is played to win points. The next service is then mirror-inverted from the left side into the opposing service field diagonally opposite.
Scoring and counting
As previously mentioned, a player must win six points to also win a set. You can score points through your own game or through your opponent’s serve mistakes. In a service game – when you’re the person serving the ball – the point is to be the first to score 4 points before your opponent scores 3 points. This way you can already achieve the two point lead and win the service game.
However, counting the points in tennis is a bit more complicated. A point won means 15:0 in tennis. Another point won means 30:0, another point won means 40:0. If another point is gained after that, the player wins the game. Six of those games won in this way means one set won. If a player has won two sets in this way, he is the winner.
However, the opponent also scores points and a decision can take several sets and a long time with opponents of the same strength.
Special features of doubles:
In a doubles game, you can also serve in the imaginary extension of the outer lines at the base line. In doubles and mixed, at the beginning of each set it can also be freely determined which player has the serve. If the same team is serving again, the other player on the team must serve. The two players in the team must also take turns during the rally.
In doubles or mixed, a player can return the ball (except when serving) before this first touch on the ground (volley) or after the first touch on the ground. If the ball touches the fence or another fixed facility on the tennis court or in the hall after the valid first touch of the ground, this counts as a second touch of the ball in the field and as a point for the opponents. A setback after that is no longer valid.
Advantages
Tennis has established itself as a popular sport in recent decades. There are countless tennis clubs or leisure clubs with tennis facilities that can be used for little money. The basic equipment with rackets and balls is also quite inexpensive.
If you want to improve your playing techniques and strategies or practice the sport professionally, you will quickly find a connection and support in sports clubs.
There are many opportunities to develop in this sport from amateur to professional, to learn new things and to improve your own playing technique.
Disadvantages
The basic rules of the game should be explained in detail before each game, as calculating the points system can be a bit cumbersome. Without an external referee, the assessment of “ball still on the line” or “ball out of bounds” can also be somewhat difficult.
Anyone who has more ambitions for tennis than a hobby must at least join a club in order to have professional training opportunities. Since there are many playing techniques and strategies to learn, you probably cannot do without a private trainer and many hours of practice.

If you have ambitions that go beyond a hobby, you will find many opportunities for further development. But you should at least join a tennis club. Since good equipment, tennis court access, and private lessons are essential, it can get a bit pricey even for amateur athletes.
In order to play badminton correctly, you absolutely need the badminton rules. We have summarized these for you and explained them in detail so that there are no misunderstandings during the game.
Badminton can be learned quickly and is therefore suitable for all age groups. However, this sport demands speed and high physical fitness from the players. Badminton is played worldwide as a competitive sport by over 14 million people in more than 160 nations.
History of badminton
Badminton is a popular racquet game with a shuttlecock and racquet that has a long history. Already 2000 years ago there were similar games in India and the Aztecs also knew a comparable game with feathered balls. Badminton was very popular among the nobility in Europe during the Baroque period. The rules corresponded to those we know for badminton today: The players pass each other a badminton with simple rackets as often as possible without letting it touch the ground.
The game of badminton, on the other hand, uses a net and has more specific rules, based on the Indian game of poona brought home by British colonial officers. The game takes its name from the place where it was first introduced in Great Britain, the country estate Badminton House in 1872. The first English badminton championships were held in 1899 and badminton quickly became as popular as tennis.
The first badminton sports club was founded in Germany in 1902, and it was also the first on the European mainland. However, the first German championships were not held until 1953 and since the late 1980s badminton has also been part of school sport.
Content and design
In badminton, the players try to hit the shuttlecock over a net with a racket in such a way that the opponent can no longer hit it back according to the rules. There is badminton as singles with two players, but also with four players as doubles or mixed. The playing technique and the rules are somewhat similar to tennis. Unlike tennis, badminton is always played indoors. In Germany, a badminton hall must have a height of at least 5 meters and is only considered unrestrictedly playable from a height of 9 meters.
The playing field
However, the badminton court is significantly smaller than a tennis court at 13.40 meters long and 6.10 meters wide. A net with a height of 1.55 meters on the sides and 1.524 meters in the middle is stretched in the middle, which divides the field into two halves. A baseline and sidelines delimit the playing field, which in turn is divided by a center line. A service line runs parallel to the net at a distance of 1.98 meters. Different line limits apply to a singles and a doubles or mixed game. On the sides and for the serve. The net posts are on the side lines of the double field.
Racket and ball
A badminton racket weighs less than a tennis racket and must not be longer than 68 centimeters and no wider than 23 centimeters. The racquet head has an even pattern of crossing strings. The length of the main strings can be a maximum of 28 centimeters and that of the cross strings 22 centimeters, but can be extended into the racket neck.
The game ball made of natural or artificial materials has a crown with 16 springs attached to the base, mostly made of plastic, which gives it special flight characteristics. A natural shuttlecock has a cork base covered with a layer of leather and is considered the standard for evaluating flight characteristics. The weight is between 4.74 and 5.50 grams. A synthetic ball may deviate 10 percent from the standard in terms of dimensions and weight.
Typically, a ball is tested by a full underhand hit from the baseline down the sideline. Ball speed is considered correct when the shuttlecock lands in an area that is between 53 and 99 centimeters from the opposing baseline.
Beginning of the game and rules of the game Badminton
The game begins with the drawing of lots for which player has the choice of service and return or choice of side of the field.
When serving, players must be within the diagonally opposite service courts without touching the boundary lines. The players’ feet must also be in contact with the ground for the most part when they serve. If the forward movement of the server’s clubhead touches the ball, the serve is deemed to have been made. The serve movement must not be slowed down or stopped.
In addition, must
the racquet must be pointing downwards
hit the base of the ball first
the entire ball must be no higher than the waist, below the lowest rib of the server and have an upward motion on serve.
If a player misses the ball when serving, it is considered a fault and the opponent gets a point. It is counted in points and sets with two winning sets, which are played up to 21 points. For each mistake in a rally, the opponent receives a point, regardless of the right to serve. Even if the ball touches the bottom of the opponent’s court, the opponent wins the rally.
The ball is out of play when it hits the ground, hits the net or the post and then falls back into the court of the player who last struck the ball. In contrast to tennis, badminton continues to play even if the ball touches the net when it is served, but it still ends up in the opponent’s service area.
Points and sets
A game ends when one side wins two sets, i.e. reaches 21 points first. There are exceptions when the score is 20:20. You need a two-point lead to win here. If the score is 29:29, the side that scores the next point wins. In any case, the sentence ends with the 30th point. Whoever wins a set has the right to serve in the next set.
After each set there is a change of playing field and that also in a possible third set if the leading player has reached 11 points.
Single game
In singles, the singles sideline and baseline are considered to be the boundaries of the singles field. The service court is in turn bounded by the centerline, baseline and singles sideline. The serve is in the right service field if the server has an even score, in the left field if the score is odd. The badminton ball is hit back and forth across the net until it is no longer in play. If the server wins the rally, he gets a point and is allowed to serve again, but from the other service court. If the opponent wins the rally, he gets a point and the right to serve.
Doubles and mixed
In doubles, men or women play against each other, in mixed, teams consist of men and women. In doubles, the full size of the playing field is used. The service court is delimited by the center line, back double service line and double side line. In doubles, the partner may take any position within their own court during the serve. However, no player may obstruct the view of other players at any time. Once the serve is returned, any player from any position may return the ball while it is in play. However, the player diagonally opposite the server must return the ball first.
If the serving team wins the rally, there is a point. The same server then serves again from the other side of the court. However, if the opposing team wins, they get the point and the right to serve. The serve position must also change again. The right to serve alternates diagonally, that is, from the first server in right field to the opponent in left field, then to the original server’s team-mate back to the first server’s first opponent, and then back to the first server again.
It is not allowed to change this order or serve twice in a row. If mistakes are made, these do not count towards winning points. At the beginning of each sentence, all positions of the players can be redefined.
Mistakes and winning points
You can win points if you make the following mistakes:
when the serve is not correct, e.g. the racquet does not hit the base of the ball
if the ball gets caught in the net or flies under the net
holds the racquet over or under the net in the opponent’s field of play. However, swinging out when hitting the net is allowed.
when the ball is played beyond the boundary lines or falls outside
if the ball touches the ceiling or walls, a player or his clothing, an object or person outside the field of play
Impeding or distracting the opponents in a form is also considered a mistake.
if the ball is caught with the bat and thrown, i.e. not hit correctly
if the ball is hit twice before the second leg or does not fly in the direction of the opponent’s field of
play
repetitions
if a player touches the net during the rally, or
There are repetitions without errors or points gained in the following cases:
The opponent is not ready on serve.
Both opposing players commit a fault at the same time.
The ball gets stuck in the net after a second leg.
In the event of any other unforeseen or unintended event.
The ball breaks during a rally.
The ball hits an object located above the playing field.
Badminton: advantages and disadvantages

It turns out badminton is named after a place: Badminton House, the estate where the game was first played in England. Badminton House is the private home of the Duke and Duchess of Beaufort and lies in the Gloucestershire countryside.
Is badminton an Olympic sport?
Yes
Where did badminton originate?
The game of badminton originated in Siam, China over 2,000 years ago. It was brought to England in 1870 and was played somewhat like tennis. After being played in Canada, badminton arrived in America and has been popular since 1929. Since 1992, badminton has been an Olympic sport, with bird speeds reaching 100 m.p.h.
From fun on the beach to an Olympic discipline: Beach volleyball (in German beach volleyball) has developed into a popular competitive sport worldwide in a relatively short time. This special variant of the volleyball game originated in the USA around 1920 based on a game that was popular on Waikīkī Beach in Hawaii.
This variant of indoor volleyball soon spread to Santa Monica and other beaches in California, as well as the Brazilian beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. What initially seemed just casual entertainment quickly turned professional. The beach clubs, their organized leisure activities for members and competitions between the beach clubs soon led to official beach volleyball competitions. In Europe, too, the triumph of this sport from about 1930 could not be stopped. However, the first official beach volleyball tournaments in Germany did not take place until 1989 and the first European championships in 1993.
Beach volleyball has been one of the disciplines of the Summer Olympics since 1996 and there have been professional world championships since 1997. In the beginning, of course, those nations with lots of beaches and sand, such as the USA and Brazil, dominated this sport. However, only a short time later, nations such as Germany, China and Australia were also able to win medals in this sport.
Content and design
As with the racquet sport in the hall, two teams face each other in two opposite playing fields separated by a net. The aim of the game is to play a ball over the net into the opponent’s half of the field so that it touches the ground, or to force the opposing team to make another mistake.
Originally, these teams consisted of six players per team, just like in indoor volleyball. The two-player style of play that is common today is attributed to an incident in which a beach volleyball organizer waited in vain for some of his teammates to appear.
Field and net
The beach volleyball court is rectangular, measures 16 by 8 meters and must be completely covered with sand. Each team plays in one half of the field measuring 8 by 8 metres. There is no center line and therefore no penalty points when a player enters the opponent’s half of the field. But the opposing team must not be disturbed by this. There is a three-metre free zone of at least three meters outside the edge of the touchline. A net is stretched in the middle of the playing field, which is 2.43 meters high for men and 2.24 meters for women. The height of the upper edge is measured here. Antennas are located at the ends of the network.
Players and apparel
The beach volleyball team consists of two players in light clothing and barefoot. Men usually wear shorts and a shirt, for a long time women were only required to wear a bikini as sportswear. Since 2012, women and men can play with shorts above the knee and t-shirts with sleeves.
Ball
The beach volleyball ball has a water-repellent and soft light-colored cover, usually made of imitation leather, and a rubber bladder inside. The circumference is between 66 and 68 centimeters, the weight ranges from 260 to 280 grams. The internal pressure should be 171 to 221 millibars.
Gameplay
As this is an open-air game, weather conditions play a major role. Basically, the weather conditions must not cause any risk of injury for the players. If bad weather leads to an interruption of the game, it can be continued later on the basis of the intermediate result.
The game begins with the ball being served in the service zone over the net between the two antennas into the opposing team’s field. The service zone is behind the baseline and is laterally limited by the extension of the two sidelines. In contrast to indoor volleyball, there are no fixed playing positions. Each player can stand in any position of the field half. However, the right to serve belongs to the team that has scored a point. As long as the opposing team cannot win the rally, the same player always serves.
However, if there is an error in the order during the serve rotation, it does not count as an error for the score. There are usually side changes after every seven points played, in a deciding set after five rallies. This should compensate for any disadvantages of playing outdoors.
Ball touch and playing techniques
Each team must play the ball over the net into the opposing field at the latest on the third contact. A block already counts as the first ball contact. The two team players must take turns touching the ball. The only exceptions are immediately after a block, if the blocking player touches the ball a second time or if there is a double touch – for example from the arm to another part of a player’s body – when the ball is first touched.
In principle, the ball may be touched and played by any part of the body. When passing, the upper and lower passes are permitted. However, the ball may only be thrown straight forwards or backwards, but not to the side. Attacking feints with an open hand, as in indoor volleyball, are not allowed and even count as errors. The usual playing technique is the so-called digging and there are special serving and passing techniques for beach volleyball, such as touching the ball with your knuckles (pokeshot).
In defense there are also strict rules for the use of hands and fingers. The ball must always be hit and must not be touched, caught or thrown for a long time. A pass from the fingers or fingertips, as in indoor volleyball, is often whistled off as too “hard” by the referee. For example, in the case of a “hard attack hit”, it is allowed to hold the hands cupped to the ball, the arms must be stretched. However, a serve never counts as a hard attack hit. A so-called lob, a ball placed with the open hand as in indoor volleyball, is prohibited in beach volleyball.
Points counting
If a team fails to return the ball after the third contact or if the ball falls to the ground, the opponent gets a point. According to the so-called rally point system, a team can score points both on their own serve and on an opponent’s serve. A match lasts for two winning sets, requiring 21 points and a margin of at least two points over the opponent to win. If there is a tie, 15 points must be achieved in the eventual third set (tiebreak).
Each team is entitled to a time-out for each set, which they can choose freely. After 21 points, there is usually a technical time-out of 30 seconds, but not in a third set. A short break is also allowed for cleaning sunglasses.
Game tactics
In professional beach volleyball, one player acts primarily as a blocker and the other takes over the acceptance. Since no instructions from a trainer are allowed in the game, a special communication technique has developed in beach volleyball. The players on a team communicate using individual hand signals to work out their strategy.
Advantages
Beach volleyball stands for outdoor exercise and is therefore already considered healthy.
As a leisure activity, beach volleyball is still very popular as a hobby and can be played by all age groups outside of the competition rules.
The rules of the game are simple and can easily be adapted to the current circumstances – more than just two players, for example a carpet pole instead of a net.
Beach volleyball includes a lot of different movement sequences, requires a bit of fitness and therefore trains the entire body in a playful way.
Since a ball can be played with any part of the body, a lot of fun and action is guaranteed.
When playing in the sand away from competitive ambitions, the risk of injury is relatively low, even for inexperienced players.
Disadvantages
Beach volleyball requires good physical preparation with strength and endurance training for everyone who wants to play this sport more seriously.
In order to prevent the risk of injury, the playing techniques must also be learned correctly. The ankles can also be overstrained, especially if the preliminary conditioning training is missing.
Fingers and hands are prone to injury here, so you should also train and stretch in advance. There is also special medical tape for the fingers.
For those who want to practice this sport more intensively, it can’t be that easy to find suitable playing and training areas. This sport is practiced outdoors and on the sand, making it more difficult to train in Central Europe than, say, in Hawaii.
It is also not possible to hold tournaments everywhere, since Central Europe is more susceptible to unpredictable weather and the resulting game interruptions, even in summer.
Is beach volleyball an Olympic sport?
Yes
Can you kick the ball in beach volleyball?
You might be wondering, can I kick in beach volleyball too? The answer is yes, the rules are the same for beach volleyball as indoor when it comes to kicking.
How did bikinis become the uniform for women’s beach volleyball?
“You’re not wearing more clothing in really hot weather; getting sand stuck in places is not fun. But I totally respect other people wanting to be more covered if that’s what makes them more comfortable.”
What kind of swimsuits do women’s beach volleyball players wear?
As a pro athlete, everyone has a different comfort level with either a bikini or one-piece bathing suit.
