John Cusack was born on June 28, 1966, the son of documentary filmmaker Richard Cusack and an actress, in Evanston, Illinois.
Cusack became familiar with acting when he was a child. He was a permanent member of the local Piven Theater Workshop company by the age of nine, and a few years later wrote, directed and starred in his first play. Cusack’s interest in acting came from his father and was reinforced by his sister Joan, who was four years his senior. He appeared on stage with her several times and was later seen in films alongside her, such as in James Bridges’ “News Fever” in 1987. Instead of pursuing a professional acting education, Cusack went to Chicago when he was 16, where he hoped to become a film actor. He soon found his first success when he made his debut in the 1983 film Class opposite Rob Lowe and Andrew McCarthy. He was in front of the camera with the still young Will Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O”Connell, Richard Dreyfuss and Kiefer Sutherland in the youth film classic “Stand by me – The Secret of a Summer”.
In 1988 he was able to attract international attention again when he took on a leading role in the baseball drama “Eight Men and a Scandal”, alongside Charlie Sheen and Christopher Lloyd, and presented himself as a great young talent. He underpinned this reputation a year later in Cameron Crowe’s love story “Say Anything…”. Also in 1988 he founded his production company “New Crime Productions” and published the crime comedy “One Man – One Murder”, in which he was seen as a hitman who is supposed to kill his girlfriend’s father. Cusack also wrote the screenplay for the film, which became a turning point in his career. He then acted as an agent alongside Nicolas Cage in the action film “Con Air” and was thus able to finally strip away from the teenage genre. This was followed by a role as a journalist in Clint Eastwood’s “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” (1997). Cusack is also active as a voice actor and lent his voice to the cartoon “Anastasia”. He served a whole new genre with his role in the war film “The Thin Line” (1998).
Cusack became a sought-after actor and was offered increasingly demanding roles. One of his greatest performances up to that point was in 2000’s High Fidelity. In 2001, Cusack hit the big screen with America’s Sweethearts, starring Julia Roberts and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Because You Are There cinemas. In 2004 he starred in “The Judgment – Everyone is for sale” alongside the doyens Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman. Cusack also co-starred alongside Morgan Freeman in 2007’s The Contract. In addition to his work in front of the camera, he regularly wrote articles for the Huffington Post. In 2008 he was nominated for the Saturn Award for “Room 1408”. In 2009 he played a leading role in the disaster film “2012”. In 2015 he received the Canadian Screen Award for Best Supporting Actor in “Maps to the Stars”. He played the lead role of Dutch Albert in Ivan Kavanagh’s Western-style action film Never Grow Old.
