The Italian designer led the PRADA family business, which has been run by the third generation since 1913, into one of the most important luxury brands in the world. Miuccia Prada was born May 5, 1949 in Milan.

After finishing school, Miuccia Prada studied political science in Milan; she completed her studies with a doctorate. She then enjoyed five years of acting and pantomime training with Giorgio Strehler at Milan’s Piccolo Teatro. In 1977, at the age of 28, Prada took over the family business for the manufacture of traditional leather goods in Milan. The PRADA company was founded in 1913 by her grandfather and then continued by her mother. In 1980, Prada came out with a new collection of handbags. The unlettered handbags made of black nylon material with artistic execution became a fashion hit. Prada handbags were not only worn by the catwalk models, but also by the fashion editors. In 1989, Prada presented their fall/winter ready-to-wear collection, which was critically acclaimed. It was characterized by a simple style with a minimalist design and was in complete contrast to the lavish equipment of other brands.

Their stylistic character showed the “bad taste”, which was particularly supported by the fabric patterns. Prada explored the mix of translucent latex, plastic and satin, mixed with fragments of mirrors and film strips. The designs, which took some getting used to, were associated with plastic tablecloths from the 1950s. The numerous imitations confirmed the success of this idiosyncratic style. In 1980 Prada married the belt manufacturer Patrizio Bertelli; a very successful business relationship developed from this. Two children were born of the marriage. In 1992, Prada expanded her fashion offering and founded the Miu Miu label, which bears her nickname. It is an entry-level label in the cheaper category and is based on the early hippie style of clothing with natural materials and colours. The following year, in 1993, Prada was honored with the international award “Council of Fashion Designers of America”. She received the award for her clear design line, excellent material quality and excellent craftsmanship. In 1994 Prada showed their fashion creations for the first time in a show in New York.

During this time she also opened a boutique in London. Efficient business management, designs of sophistication and elegance made Prada the Italian fashion tsar. From her grandfather’s production company for traditional leather goods, she created an international luxury brand that achieved cult status. In the 1990s, Prada took on large debts to take over the financially troubled company “Fendi”. It shared the shareholding in Fendi with Louis Vuitton Moët Hennesy (LVMH). Prada failed to turn the loss-making Fendi company into profit and sold its stake in LVMH. Prada was unable to recover financially from this adventure and went into the French luxury goods group LVMH itself. The “Fondazione Prada”, a project by Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli, has presented two contemporary artists with exhibitions in Milan every year since 1995.

In 2003 the novel “The Devil Wears Prada” was released and in 2006 the movie “The Devil Wears Prada” was based on it. In 2016, the US magazine “Glamur” honored her with the Woman of the Year Award for her artistic work. In 2018 she received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the British Fashion Council.
